He had been the main instigator of the uprising that led to the deposition of his predecessor Domenico Selvo (1071-1084).
In 1084 he rebuilt a church built in the year 700 and dedicated it to St. Vitale, in Venetian Church of St. Vidal, located at the end of Campo Santo Stefano.
He personally led the naval battle near Corfu against Robert Guiscard and defeated him between the island of Corfu and the town of Butrint (on the Albanian coast), avenging the previous year's defeat suffered by his predecessor.
