During his dogado the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) broke out in which all the European powers were involved. The warring armies raided the territory of the Republic, but it managed to maintain its armed neutrality.
To him Luca Carlevarijs dedicated (1703) Le fabbriche e vedute di Venezia (103 engravings to acquaint foreigners with the magnificence of the Serenissima at the end of the 17th century).
