He was 72 years old (he was born on 21 August 1543) and had a fine military background.
At only 12 years of age, he had demonstrated all his courage by embarking on a galley. At the age of 28, he took part in the Battle of Lepanto (1571) in command of a galley, distinguishing himself by his daring despite repeated wounds. Several times provveditore d'armata, he was savio, councillor, and finally captain general da mar, while on 14 August 1601 he was elected procurator of S. Marco de ultra.
