Paolo Caliari, known as the Veronese, was born in Verona in 1528.

The family's real surname is not known, but it is known that Paolo took the surname Caliari from 1555 onwards, signing the contract for the Montagnana Pala.
In 1541 his name appears in Antonio Badile's workshop and he later joined the group of artists protected by the architect Sanmicheli together with Giambattista Zelotti.

Paolo produced several works within the first half of the century and before arriving in Venice, including the Mystic Marriage of St Catherine (1547) for the wedding between Anna della Torre and Giambattista Pindemonte, the Pala Bevilacqua-Lazise (1548) for the chapel of the same name in the church of San Fermo Maggiore in Verona, the Lamentation over the Dead Christ commissioned by Abbot Bernardo Torlioni and the Deposition of Christ. The altarpiece for the Giustiniani chapel in San Francesco della Vigna in 1551 is Paolo's first Venetian work and there is an obvious citation of the Pala Pesaro
