He was 74 years old (he was born in 1399).

He had been rector in Brescia, Verona and Udine, then head of the Council of X, and finally procurator of St. Mark's de supra from 12 May 1466.

His devotion and curiosity for relics led him to discover, among the enormous quantity of objects that had become part of St. Mark's Treasury over the centuries, a box containing a piece of wood and a nail, believed to be relics of the Cross of Christ. Authentic or not, these relics were often displayed and carried in processions.
