Italian composer who marked the transition from Renaissance to Baroque music.
He wrote one of the first theatrical works, the Orpheus, with the support of the plot, which is commonly referred to as Melodrama. With his writings he introduced new compositional methods and the advent of 'second practice', techniques that were essential in the evolution of the history of music.

Born in Cremona on 9 May 1567 - and baptised on 15 May - he began studying counterpoint and viola at an early age and was later appointed chapel master at the court of Mantua. From 1613 until the year of his death he received the same title in Venice, in the Basilica di San Marco.He married Claudia Cattaneo by whom he had two sons, Francesco and Maximilian. Decisive were his trips to Hungary, Flanders and major Italian cities, which enabled him to hone his technique and artistic skills.
