Born in Cremona on 9 May 1567 - and baptised on 15 May - he began studying counterpoint and viola at an early age and was later appointed chapel master at the court of Mantua. From 1613 until the year of his death he received the same title in Venice, in the Basilica di San Marco.He married Claudia Cattaneo by whom he had two sons, Francesco and Maximilian.
