He was 67 years old (he was born on 7 October 1554) and belonged to an old family from the branch of the Contarini dalla porta di ferro (so called because the doors of the entrance door of the Contarini Palace in San Francesco della Vigna were decorated with wrought iron).
He had studied in Padua, had been a bailo in Constantinople (1604), where he had written a history of the Turkish war, had also been an ambassador, and had been elected procurator of St. Mark de citra (9 December 1615).
