Apart from the wars against Zara, an untamed Dalmatian city, the recovery of Grado, occupied by the Patriarch of Aquileia, and the victory in Apulia over the Normans, the new doge did not face any major controversies.
Having subdued Zadar, retaken Grado (1042) and rebuilt it after the fire by the Patriarch of Aquileia, Contarini was appointed first archiproto and then magister by the basileus.
During his dogate there were great benefits, also because the doge continued the work of his predecessor Domenico Flabanico who, through agricultural expansion in the Po hinterland and the strengthening of the naval fleet, had managed to create new economic potential and new alliances.
During his dogate, he rebuilt St. Mark's Church (1063) with the idea of making it the most magnificent in the city.
He died a natural death in 1071 and was buried in the Church of S. Nicolò del Lido that he had erected in 1053.
From 1640 his avello, which was in the sacristy, was placed on the façade with a bust of the doge.
