He was 70 years old (he was born on 10 May 1548).
He was a devout man and well liked by the people for his magnanimity and political sagacity.
He had married Elena Barbarigo, who died before his election as doge, and had given him 14 children (6 boys and 8 girls), of whom two boys devoted themselves to the ecclesiastical life and seven girls to the cloistered one.
