He was born in 1240 and was therefore 72 years old.

In his youth he had been podestà in Chioggia and Ferrara, but had also distinguished himself as an admiral against the Genoese in the capture of Caffa (1296).

A few years before becoming doge he had been elected procurator of St Mark's (15 March 1309).

His dogado was peaceful and began with a fine diplomatic move thanks to Francesco Dandolo, ambassador to Avignon: Pope Clement V lifted (1313) the excommunication of the city.

On the political front, the new doge established new and fruitful relations
