There are four entrances to the building: two by land crossing the courtyard or along the side street through a small entrance and two entrances from the water, one from the Grand Canal, the other from the Rio di San Luca.

The facade of the building, which overlooks the Grand Canal, is made up of three floors of Corinthian orders; colossal its dimensions and its perfect line. Despite the monumental size, the applied decorations give a sense of lightness to the building. A long terrace runs along the entire facade and divides the lower order from the main floor with columns; the latter is in turn separated from the top floor by a sturdy string course. Looking at the building from the lagoon, there is a high arched door in the middle with two minor entrances on the sides; above the arch of the portal one can admire allegorical figures the Victories, works in bas-relief carried out by Alessandro Vittoria while human heads are wedged in the arches of the windows.

The palace was designed, at the behest of the Grimani family, by Michele Sanmicheli, an architect who built in Verona, among other monuments, the walls and the Nuova, S.Zeno and Palio gates.
