Alvise Contarini was the 106th doge of the Serenissima (1676-1684).

He was almost 75 years old (he was born on 24 October 1601) and belonged to the Castello branch, known as the Iron Gate.

His cursus honorum was marked by prestigious stages: ambassador to Holland (1631), France (1633), Spain (1637), Rome (1645-1648), procurator of St. Mark's de supra (22 October 1653).

As doge, Alvise aimed above all to heal the heavy economic liabilities accumulated following the wars against the Turks and so it was that within a few years the state budget returned to surplus (1679).
