He was 52 years old (he was born in 1330) and was a captain in Crete.

Everyone considered him an outsider because he had no cursus honorum of excellence and was not a diplomat, but belonged to one of the New Houses.

Upon news of the election, Antonio Venier left Crete on board a galley and arrived in Venice on 13 January 1383.

Chronicle has it that his inauguration was celebrated for a whole year, despite the fact that a wave of pestilence had just passed: he was well liked by the people also because he came from the people.
