He was 75 years old (he was born on 5 July 1580).
Behind him was an intense political career as rector, podestà and provveditore.
His election was unexpected. An inauspicious event weighed on it: two days before his election, while celebrating the anniversary of the city's foundation (25 March 421), 50 people were crushed in the crowd.
During his short dogado (14 months) Contarini devoted himself to solving the problems of the weaker sections of the population, while outside the Republic continued the war for the possession of Crete.
