He was 60 years old (he was born in 1596), descended from an ancient lineage, enjoyed being a great statesman, and was wealthy, but not very rich.
He was the third doge consecutively elected who did not hold the title of procurator of St. Mark's, which did not seem to count for much.
He was married to Benedetta Pisani who died in 1595, the year before his election. He had many children, all of whom died before him except Silvestro.
After more than a year as dogado, he fell ill with gout, also began to have respiratory problems and finally died.
