He was 72 years old (he was born in 1390) and had been among other things ambassador to the Holy See of Eugene IV and Nicholas V.
On 14 September 1448, he had been elected procurator of S. Marco de ultra.
On the obverse of the coins minted under his dogado he had the phrase Religionis et Iusticiae Cultor written.
He was a long-suffering bigot, chaste since his youth. It is said that he refused a nun who had escaped from the convent to join him.
He was, however, a man with solid administrative experience.
