He seems to have belonged to the House of Badoer (from Baduario, meaning Byzantine patrician, son of Constantinople), one of the Apostolic families. He was therefore not related to previous doges of the same surname, neither to the eponymous Orso Partecipazio (864-881), nor to the two Giovanni Partecipazio (829-837 and 881-887), although some say he was descended from the Partecipazios who had already given several doges.
