He was 87 years old (he was born on 15 January 1491) and regularly fell asleep during the sessions.
A skilful diplomat, he had been bailo in Corfu (1532-1535), senator (1535), avogadore (1540), lieutenant of the Patria del Friuli (1541), member of the Council of X in 1553, 1555 and 1557, podestà of Padua (1558-1559), procuratore di S. Marco de ultra from 30 July 1570.
He had studied philosophy at the University of Padua, but had become rich through mercantile activity and had built the Palazzo da Ponte in S. Maurizio (St. Mark's).
