Salt was, for centuries, a fundamental element in the lives of Venetians: besides being a perfect trade commodity, it allowed for optimal preservation of food, at a time when the refrigerator did not exist.

It was precisely the need to have a place where large quantities of this food could be stored that led to the construction of these buildings.

This enormous monumental complex was built approximately at the beginning of the 15th century in a crucial point of the city: in fact, along these foundations, there was one of the main landing places for the boats that brought materials and goods to Venice. The first certain date of the building's existence dates back to 20 October 1531, as testified by Sanudo in his Diaries, and is recorded in a decree of the Serenissima that authorised the start of restoration work on the site to prevent part of the roofs from collapsing.The motivations that led to the construction of this building are clea
