He was elected on 23 July 1268 with the last and final electoral reform for the election of the doge approved by the M.C. meeting inside St. Mark's Basilica.

Nine alternating steps of election and drawing of lots were established, culminating in the selection of the 41 electors who finally chose the doge.

Lorenzo Tiepolo had been, among others, count of Veglia, podestà in several cities (Treviso, Padua, Fermo and Fano) and had fought in the East as captain general da mar in 1256, bringing to Venice the two Acritan pillars and the stone of the proclamation later placed next to St. Mark's Church, towards the Porta della Carta (Charter Gate) leading to the Doge's Palace.

He had two wives, Agnese Ghisi, who did not become dogaressa, and Marchesina, niece of the basileus Giovanni and daughter of the king of Serbia (Bohemond of Brienne), or perhaps of the king of Romania.

He was buried in the ark of the other doge (Jacopo Tiepolo) on the outside wall of the Church of St. John and Paul (Castello).
