He was 69 years old, having been born in Venice around 1331, and boasted a turbulent youth: a stunt at the time of Doge Falier (1354-1355) had triggered the doge's reaction, offended by some inscriptions addressed to him and the dogaressa; he used to slip into the bed of some girl, preferably a nun, and abuse her, but then he put his head on straight and built up a cursus honorum of quality.
He took office on 19 December and received great festivities: on that occasion the Compagnie della calza were born, i.e. associations of young patricians who organised parties whenever there was something or someone to celebrate.
His dogate extended to the mainland, with the fundamental acquisitions of Verona, Padua, Vicenza, Treviso, Ceneda, Feltre, Belluno, Cividale, the Seven Communes, as well as the reacquisition of Zara and part of Dalmatia, and saw the effective birth of the State from the land, while politics in the Levant changed radically from the time of acquisitions to the defensive and conservative time of the State from the sea, i.e. the spaces acquired and threatened by the emerging Turkish power.
