A jurist of renown, endowed with a prodigious memory, a gruff and grumpy man, he possessed a cursus honorum of all respect having been ambassador several times, then rector, podestà and avogador of Comun.

The conclave for his election was very short: the patricians were in a hurry to immediately restore a new doge to the Republic in order to extinguish the stir caused by the (alleged) conspiracy of Marin Falier and his execution.
