Battle-hardened and energetic, he is remembered for organising the defence of the territory against the danger posed by the Hungarians and acclaimed as a liberator: in the year 900, in order to defend the political centre of the city and thus the seat of government from possible dangers of attack and above all to guard against Hungarian invasions, he had a wall built in a hurry from Rio di Castello (later Rio della Canonica, next to the Doge's Palace) to S.M. Zobenico.
