Son-in-law of Doge Domenico Michiel. He was 30 years old (he was born in 1100). Against his election the Badoer and Dandolo families took sides, more or less openly.
The power groups thus imposed a return to the tribune-councillors, instituted in 756, who effectively became tribune-councillors-councillors, and tried to transform the very private Council of the Dux into an official body that took the title of Council of the Sages of the Commune, traditionally considered the first nucleus of what was to become the Great Council, precisely to limit the doge's powers more and more.
