He was 69 years old (born 21 November 1710) and had been ambassador in Vienna (1764-1768) and later bailo in Constantinople (1769-1773).
A man of culture, he had translated Plato into Venetian.
Politically, he was a reformer, but once he became doge he sided against the innovators.
