He was 85 years old (he was born in 1107).

He was the first doge to swear the Doge's Promission, the statute regulating the doge's powers, i.e. the constitutional oath solemnly binding him before the patriciate, which had just been passed by the Council of Sages.

Making the most of the opportunity offered by the Fourth Crusade, he first succeeded in reconquering Zadar, ending the Zadar War (1183-1203), and then in taking Constantinople (1204), laying the foundations of the Venetian maritime state.
