Already a valiant and victorious captain-general da mar at the Battle of Lepanto (7 October 1571).
Already procurator of S. Marco de ultra since 15 May 1570, Venier was 81 years old (he was born in 1496). His wife Cecilia Contarini had given him a daughter, Elena, but there were also two natural children.
During the Battle of Lepanto he had been wounded in the foot. His participation in that battle had resonance not only in Venice: although John of Austria was the commander of the fleet that defeated the Turks, the strategies were directed from the Venetian flagship he commanded. After the victory at Lepanto and as a tribute to his valour, he was chosen as the new doge.
His dogado, however, was very short. According to the chronicle, he died of a broken heart after once again seeing the Doge's Palace with many works of art go up in smoke (20 December 1577).
