He was 67 years old (he was born in 1489).
He was highly educated and well-built, and had distinguished himself as a podestà in various cities and as a diplomat on several missions.
He had married Zilia Dandolo, who later became dogaressa amidst great celebrations. He had four children, a boy and three girls.
Memorable was the pomp with which he inaugurated his dogado, which was immediately plagued by a petechial typhus epidemic that claimed many victims, a painful famine and some extraordinary high water.
