He had a fine political career behind him and was also procurator of St. Mark de supra from 24 April 1350.
He received the news of his election while as field superintendent he was defending Treviso besieged by the Hungarians. He managed to force the blockade and rode at full speed to Mestre, where he was expected to be escorted into the city.
Courageous and decisive, the new doge could not, however, prevent the loss of Dalmatia and the advent of a long economic crisis during his dogate, but he did his utmost to limit the damage.
