He was 73 years old (he was born in 1486) and succeeded his own brother Lorenzo.
As a young man he had embraced the mercantile trade and had become very rich.
Two years before he became doge, although he had not had an important public career, he had been elected procurator of S. Marco de ultra (30 May 1557).
He was married to Elena Diedo and had a son, Lodovico.
During his dogado the Turks kept quiet, but corsairs infested the Adriatic and so the Republic was forced to send (1562) Cristoforo da Canal to keep them at bay.
