Son of Jacopo and brother of Giovanni, Gentile Bellini was born in Venice in early 1429; his date of birth is assumed from the 6 February will of his mother Anna, who feared for her life in view of the imminent birth.
In the signature of the lost altarpiece executed for the Gattamelata chapel in the Paduan church of the Santo, the two names of the Bellini brothers appear with that of Gentile first, a sign of primogeniture. This hypothesis is also supported by Gentile da Fabriano, who indicates him as the first son of Jacopo, and by Francesco Negro, a contemporary of our artist, who defines him as maior natu.

Gentile's training almost certainly took place in his father's famous workshop, and he was also influenced by his brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna and the Paduan environment.His first signed work dates back to 1465 and is the portrait of San Lorenzo Giustiniani, painted for the church of the Madonna dell'Orto and now housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, in which his skills as a portrait painter already emerge.The following year came the first commission from the Venetian schools.
