Alvise Mocenigo I was the 85th Doge of the Serenissima (1570-1577).

He was 63 years old (he was born in 1507).

A cultured man and member of the Accademia della Fama, he eschewed mercantile activities and was a patron of science, letters and the arts.

He held numerous diplomatic posts and was among other things ambassador to Emperor Charles V and Popes Paul IV and Pius IV, and finally from 17 February 1565 m.v. procurator of S. Marco de ultra.

His dogado was not a serene one, he saw victory over the Turks at Lepanto (1571), but also the less than honourable peace that, due to the dissolution of the Christian League,
