Marin Sanudo, also known as Marino Sanuto the Younger, was born in Venice on 22 May 1466. He came from the ancient patrician Candiani-Sanudo family, a leading figure in Venetian history from the very beginning and capable of producing five doges between the ninth and tenth centuries.

Marino trained as a humanist and found talent in writing about the events of his time with ease and precision, until he produced the monumental production of 58 tomes consisting of 40,000 papers he wrote, entitled Diarii.
