Lina Merlin, born Angelina Merlin, was born in Pozzonovo, in the province of Padua, on October 15, 1887, into a petty bourgeois family. At the age of four, she moved to Chioggia in the house of her maternal grandmother. She was the first of nine siblings. She remained in Chioggia until she graduated from a master's degree. She graduated in French language and literature at the University of Padua and obtained a chair in French at a school in the same city.
