The church owes its construction to two personalities: San Bernardino da Siena (particularly active and present in Venice towards the middle of the 15th century) and the doge Cristoforo Moro (who contributed significantly to the civil and religious development of this urban area, especially during the its stave from 1462 to 1471). It was built around 1450 by two well-known and very active architects in Venice: Antonio Gambello and Lorenzo di Gian Francesco; the bell tower was completed in 1464.

The entrance portal was built by the illustrious sculptor Pietro Lombardo thanks to the sum of 10,000 ducats that Doge Cristoforo Moro decided to invest in this work which represented the Franciscan spirit of renewal and change through faith and devotion to God. , in fact, starting from the bottom, it shows a bush of thorns that rises upwards and gradually transforms into flowers and fruits to which numerous birds and symbolic animals feed, until it reaches, at the highest point, the glorious eagle - symbolic bird par excellence, used by the Bible to represent the resurrection and rebirth.
