In the past, it represented the extreme part of the 'St. Marta Beach', before the area was converted to port and residential uses. Today it hosts artistic and cultural events.
Located near a car park, it is the only place in the city accessible to cars, apart from Piazzale Roma.

The church was built in the early 14th century on the initiative of Giacomina Scorpioni and with the donations of numerous Venetian patricians including Marco Sanudo Torsello and Filippo Salomon. This economic intervention also allowed the foundation of the church of Sant'Andrea and of accommodation for the poor in the parish of San Nicolò.

Three years later, in 1318, due to a dispute with the religious group of San Nicolò, the intended use of the hospice was changed and it was transformed into a monastery of Benedictine nuns, coming from the convent of San Lorenzo di Ammiana.
