Located in a corner of Venice off the beaten tourist track, the church is important, albeit small and bare, for being the only example of Veneto-Byzantine architecture in a good state of preservation.

San Zan Degolà is the dialect terminology for San Giovanni Decollato.

Its origins are uncertain, some scholars date it to the 7th and 8th centuries while others date it to the early 11th century. Certainly, the Venier family contributed to the construction of the church while its restoration in the 13th century came about thanks to donations from the Pesaro family. The place of worship underwent further restoration in the following centuries but this did not lead to substantial changes to the current structure.
