Jessie White Mario - (Wikimedia Commons)

Don't be fooled by the name and birthplace of Jessie White, who, despite being born in England, is to be counted among the major contributors to the Italian Risorgimento. Jessie also married the Rovigo patriot Alberto Mario and was a friend and follower of Giuseppe Mazzini who nicknamed her 'Miss Hurricane'.
Having a noble and daring soul, she put her bursting energy at the service of the Risorgimento cause and was able to adapt her ideals to the changes in politics. She dedicated her life to works and studies, to caring for the wounded, and to the most arduous and dangerous actions.
She suffered imprisonment and humiliation but never abandoned the idea of a free and united Italy. She was among the very few women to participate in the Expedition of the Thousand. A writer, journalist and feminist, she can be considered among the most glorious figures in the history of Italy in the second half of the 19th century.
