The foundation date of the church owned by the noble Baffo family seems to date back to 1222, where an oratory dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente was erected.

In 1758 it was decided to announce a competition of ideas in which the projects of three illustrious architects stood out: Giorgio Massari (1686-1766), Giovanni Vettori and Tommaso Temanza; the latter prevailed while the first two were excluded as their design was considered too "bulky".
