The Tempest, by Giorgione, preserved in the Gallerie dell'Accademia.

The leader of the 16th-century Venetian school, Giorgione is recognisable by his geographical provenance 'from Castelfranco' or by his nickname 'Zorzon', which, as Vasari recalls, is to be found in the 'facts of the person and the greatness of the soul'.
His biographical and artistic life is still shrouded in mystery today, and only a few works can be directly attributed to him with certainty.

Defined by Giorgio Vasari as the one who would give painting a turn towards the Venetian manner, Giorgione neither demonstrates in his works the use of colour alone characterised by the absence of the drawing stage. The scarcity of biographical information regarding the artist's life, all of which is furthermore related to the latter part of his existence, has contributed to a climate of uncertainty regarding Giorgione's personality. Not even his name is mentioned in the 16th century, mostly referred to by his geographical origin 'from Castelfranco' or as 'Zorzon', due to his physical prowess.
