Ernesto Canal, known as Tito, was born in 1924 into a family of ancient patrician origin, considered at the end of the republic to be among the barnaboti (impoverished original families). His father had a foundry in Cannaregio, where they worked metals as well as Murano glass, while his aunt was a custodian at the Correr museum.
