Palazzo Grassi organizes important temporary exhibitions, some of which exhibit part or all of the collection of its owner François Pinault.

In 2007 Palazzo Grassi won the competition held by the city of Venice for the creation of a new contemporary art center at Punta della Dogana.

The museum takes its name from its last famous tenant: Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo.
