In 2007 Palazzo Grassi won the competition held by the city of Venice for the creation of a new contemporary art center at Punta della Dogana. The following year, restoration work began on the area under the direction of the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who was already director of the restoration of Palazzo Grassi in 2005.

The final result partly retains the original shape of the structure to which a vertical development of the space is implemented. All this is reminiscent of the prow of a ship or, in the specific intentions of the architect, the characteristic pointed shape of the Dorsoduro district, to which it belongs.

The works ended in 2009, the same year in which the center was inaugurated with the exhibition of some pieces from the collection of works of art of the François Pinault Foundation.
