The Procurators of St. Mark's were an influential magistracy of the Serenissima, second only to the figure of the Doge and whose election for life they share.

The year of establishment of the office can be attributed to the year 812, and on the number of the first elected Procurators there are today two historical currents: those who want only one elected, those who instead figure three as the first elected.

However, from the Codice dei Frati a proposito dei Procuratori di San Marco (Codex of the Friars about the Procurators of St. Mark) preserved at the State Archives of Venice and other sources kept at the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana (Catalogo di tutti li Procuratori di San Marco che sono stati dal principio fino al presente, printed in the 19th century by Simon Cordella) and the Correr Museum Library, it appears that the number of the first elected Procurators is three.
