With him, the Dogado was born: all the islands of the lagoon from Grado to Cavarzere manifested a 'unifying will' and, while each retained its own tribunician government, decided to be led by a single leader, the duke, later called Doge in Venetian fashion, hence the expression Dogado.
According to more recent historiography, Paoluccio (Paulicius) may derive from a mistranscription of Paulus Patricius, a title given to the exarch; he would thus be the exarch of Ravenna himself, Paul.
