What is more, its location is unique: its façade is exactly at the point where the Grand Canal turns its direction (being in 'Vvolta di Canal').

Nicolò Balbi had this palace built by the architect and sculptor Alessandro Vittoria who moved from Trento to Venice on purpose in Sansovino's workshop and finished the works in 8 years (1582 - 1590): the final result was a masterpiece and represented one of the very first palaces baroque of Venice, the driving force of seventeenth-century splendor and taken as an example by many architects for the construction of many other palaces.
