The convent was important for its library, considered one of the most important of its time, with particularly valuable furniture supporting ancient manuscripts and a hand-decorated coffered ceiling.
The entire complex managed to survive the Napoleonic edicts as it was briefly used as a political prison for Carbonari convicts, among whom Silvio Pellico and Pietro Maroncelli were also imprisoned.

The monastery of San Michele was established in the thirteenth century, passing from an initial hermit form to a later conventual one. The first settlement on the island, by the Camaldolese, dates back to the 10th century and only three centuries later it was decided to create a place that would welcome the monks and involve them in an experience of common life; the stay of the religious on the island covers the first decade of the nineteenth century.
