The building - dedicated to the four virgins of Aquileia: Eufemia, Dorotea, Tecla and Erasma made martyrs by the Roman emperor Nero - represents the oldest building in Giudecca and one of the oldest in Venice.
It seems to have been built, for the first time, in 865 and - among the various adjustments - it was rebuilt in 1100. In 1380, the remains of the martyrs, previously deposited in Grado for 400 years, were placed under the main altar.
