Detail of the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari - (Archive Venipedia / Bazzmann)

The last place in Venice where the musical tradition of the double choir can be found. At 100 metres long, it fills the campo of the same name. Its style can be described as 'Franciscan' considering the purity, magnificence and essentiality of its lines. Inside, among the innumerable works of art, three pearls of inestimable beauty shine forth: the grandiose altarpiece of the 'Assumption', the expressive force of Titian's 'Madonna di Ca' Pesaro' and Giovanni Bellini's spectacular triptych.

Originally built in 1250, the church had its apse facing the bridge and was rather small, the exact opposite of how it is now. In 1250, work began on the construction of a larger church, and in 1330, work began on an even larger church, the one we can still admire today. The church has a Latin cross plan with a large main nave and two aisles, separated by twelve columns. The central nave is surmounted by cross vaults. The choir is preceded by a large arch that frames the Assumption, Titian's famous painting. Beyond the choir is the majestic high altar with six presbyterial chapels on the side.
