The church is located in the central square of Malamocco, one of the oldest lagoon settlements. Until the early 12th century, in fact, Metamauco held important roles: it was first a ducal seat and then an episcopal seat.
The bell tower, with its Romanesque-style architecture, is said to be inspired by the masterpiece of St. Mark's.

The church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in the fifteenth century, on a pre-existing building of the eleventh century, and was then remodeled again in the sixteenth century.

The façade, divided into three parts by pilasters and characterized by a crowning of brick hanging arches, is very simple and bare and presents, perfectly in the center of the entrance portal made in Gothic style, the coat of arms of the Bellegno family and the initials BB to identify the podestà of Malamocco in 1494: Benedetto Bellegno.
